The Associated Press (via beSpacific) is reporting that in 2005, the FBI used almost ten thousand "national security letters" to obtain information on more than 3,500 people. National security letters are a mechanism provided for in the USA Patriot Act by which US law enforcement and intelligence agencies can secretly compel information from third parties.
