An e-mail from the office of Canadian Immigration Minister Jason Kenney that was targeted to members of the LGBT community has many people concerned that the government is maintaining databases of highly sensitive information like sexual orientation. Could the government simply have bought a list? See "paid services" at the bottom of the change.org website.
I would have thought they'd learned their lesson after the Rosh Hashanah greeting card blunder a few years ago.
